FinLit is Hot: Two Thirds of Americans Say Financial Smarts Make You More Attractive
An OKX Survey of 1,000 Americans found that financial compatibility and knowledge of digital assets were important to attractiveness.
In today's dating world, financial know-how is a clear advantage. That’s according to a new OKX survey which found that two-thirds of respondents (66%) think knowledge of personal finance makes you more attractive.
The appeal of money smarts resonates most with younger daters. Among Gen Z, 76% find financial literacy attractive in a partner, with Millennials close behind at 75%. Notably, Millennial women (77%) and Gen Z men (77%) were the most likely to say that financial knowledge makes someone more attractive, suggesting that, regardless of gender, the next generation of daters prioritizes partners who understand money.
Digital asset knowledge is a green flag
When asked about digital assets, including crypto and digital wallets, more than half of respondents (55% of men and 49% of women) said these make someone more attractive as a partner, citing that they're essential in today’s world.
This sentiment was strongest among younger generations: 66% of Millennials and 65% of Gen Z said digital asset knowledge is attractive, compared to just 37% of Boomers. The gap reflects broader generational differences in how Americans relate to emerging financial tools.
When it comes to actually holding digital assets, views are more mixed but still trend positive among younger cohorts: 17% of Americans (including 30% of Millennials and 28% of Gen Z) said holding digital assets actually makes someone more attractive, while 64% were neutral.
Swiping right on financial compatibility
One of the survey's most surprising findings: 50% of men and 35% of women said they would be curious to try a dating app that matches users based on crypto interests or wallet compatibility.
Interest was highest among younger men: 65% of Gen Z men and 64% of Millennial men were interested in such an app. But it's not just a male phenomenon: 53% of Gen Z women and 48% of Millennial women also expressed interest, supporting the idea of genuine appeal for finance-focused matchmaking.
Candy, chocolates or crypto?
Would crypto make a good Valentine's Day gift? For most Americans, likely not a slam dunk, but younger generations appear to be more receptive. Overall, 21% of Americans (25% of men and 17% of women) say receiving crypto for Valentine's Day would be a "turn-on," while 35% would prefer something more traditional, and 44% were neutral. Among Millennials, enthusiasm jumps to 34%. Gen Z isn't far behind at 31%, with Gen Z men the most enthusiastic at 39%. The takeaway? Crypto gifting may not be mainstream yet, but it's gaining traction among a-natives.
Still early for payments
Only 5% of Americans have paid for a date using crypto, but that figure masks a significant generational split. Among Gen Z, 13% have done so, compared to less than 1% of Boomers. About 6% say they’ve chipped in by sending crypto after the bill was paid via traditional card or cash.
For those who haven't, the reasons differ by generation. For Gen Z, the biggest barrier is access: 37% said they didn't have a way to pay with crypto. For Boomers, 65% said they simply wouldn't feel comfortable doing so. The results show that as crypto payment infrastructure expands, adoption among younger daters could grow significantly.
Crypto may not yet be a universal dating advantage, but financial literacy clearly is. As younger generations continue to embrace both traditional money skills and emerging digital assets, the message for daters is that showing your understanding of money, whether dollars or digital assets, matters more than showing off what you have.
